Stackpole Walled Garden – the Place to Visit

So thought the members and friends of Pembrokeshire South East Energy Group. This resulted in a recent trip to the Gardens to learn about the building of the new visitor centre which used many sustainable features in its construction.

The Group was met by Ian Wilshaw - Treasurer Mencap Pembrokeshire - and Mike Evans - Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) Project Manager. Ian was very instrumental in the build project from fundraising, design to the actual building. They explained that it had been a real learning curve – creating a straw bale centre from scratch was something they had never encountered in their previous engineering work. The physical effort and the need to produce a reasonably flat surface had taken skills they and their helpers had to learn. The result is very interesting and the whole building has a rustic look. It also has a brilliant insulation record.

The main heating is an air source heat pump which works well for most of the year. Water collected in a rain water storage tank is used in the toilets.

The building has a lovely cafe, office accommodation, shop (selling fruit, vegetables and pot plants from the gardens) and toilets.

We were given a talk on the history of the walled gardens – from when they were taken over on various leases. They had originally used to provide for Stackpole House but were in very bad state of repair. They are now used to provide training for people with learning disabilities and this training will be extended to working in the cafe.

Some of the funding came from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park (PCNP) and Emma Taylor, their Sustainable Development Fund Officer, was able to join us.

At the end of the afternoon we thoroughly enjoyed refreshments in the cafe and thought how many dedicated volunteers had made such a difference.

If you are looking for a lovely place to visit just 3 to 4 miles outside Pembroke you will be pleased to visit the Walled Gardens at Stackpole.
